On the Dangers of Divinity

By Profanus, follower of Tytalus, to fellow followers of Tytalus

Sodales, we have plague persisting among us. Not an ordinary, curable Black Death, but more dangerous and treacherous than most of us have realised. This plague is called roman-catholic church. More rigid than rigor mortis, it does not tolerate any non-christians to live among them, lest they are of some use to them. More greedy in their lust for power than the dark prince they so much oppose. More rapidly spreading than pox, destroying our magical areas. This is a call to action.

What has christianity ever brought to our Order but difficulties and fear? Every magus remembers the fear of persecution when the gift manifests in the childhood, but is not yet strong enough to protect from the wrath of church. In their rigidity they do not accept diversity among their sheep, ones with power to resist their ruling are to be eliminated immediately. When unable to destroy their enemy itself, church turns ordinary people to weapons. A furiously "pious" mob of peasants has been the last sight of many magi. If the enemy, however, is accepted among people, they mastermind a plot to make use of the enemy, and slowly strangle it to death. This is the case in our covenant, but I will come back to that later.

What gives church the power to control so many gullible minds? The ambition for power over mortals, of course. They are not better than petty nobles warring for territories, not even better than Lucifer himself. The only difference between the two alignments, heaven and hell, is that dealing with the fallen angel costs one's eternal soul. And of course, in that the dark powers are magically controllable, whereas divine are not, which makes it more dangerous. But the ambitions of both are as petty. Alliance or even acceptance of church is to be given same consideration as alliance or acceptance of satan and his minions.

The spreading of divinity is the most grave danger of all. The divine auras cripple our gift and makes it more difficult to find raw vis. Year by year, more churches are built, more ancient monuments are destroyed, more people are converted to christianity. Where is the place for us, magi, in the future if church dominates the world? It will be a christian hell on earth.

I stumbled on this promising covenant after apprenticeship, only to find that my sodales had gone mad with desire to provide christian rituals to their covenfolk. What for? Because they themselves are too weak to control a bunch of mortals. They even had a chapel built here, and invited a "pious" monk to live on the island. I bet he is nothing but a spy and assassin of the church, waiting for right moment to draw the "holy dagger" and punctuate me where it hurts.

So I sit and wait. Wait for them to make a mistake. When they do, I will use all my ability to strike them down! And then, my sodales, I ask for your assistance. Let's combine the force of our honourable house and convince others to join the war against the evil church. It is a challence we must not neglect, for would not victory over church be indeed the greatest victory of all?
