Saxum Deum
Saxum Deum, "The Rock of Gods", is what Aeneas named this remarkable
site up on the Taunus Mountains. It is on the slopes of the highest of
the mountains, in a forested area. The trees here grow big, the valleys
are deep and the slopes steep. There is a clearing in the forest, a
higher spot compared to the immediate surroundings. From here, peaks of
the mountains can be seen in the north and the forest covered downhill
to the south. Down below in the south, the Great River Rhine can be seen
making its turns, gleaming in the sun. When the sun sets, its rays catch
the biggest single rock in the clearing: A rock so deeply rusty red, it
strikes the viewer with awe. From uphill north, a small stream runs
downhill through the site, with water so clear and cold that no plants
grow there.
The site used to be a site of worship in the pagan times, with animals
sacrified on the rock. What deity these blood sacrifices were offered
to, remains a mystery. Nonetheless, Aeneas saw the potential of the
site, and the plentiful vis sources, and found his Ager Privatus here.
Using the ritual "Conjuring the mystic tower", he rose a square tower,
shaped like an obelisk, from the ground. Carved from a single block of
stone, it stands 80 feet high and 30 feet wide. The walls have the same
rusty red color as the sacrificial rock. For a normal human, everything
in the tower seems colossal, as Aeneas shaped the tower to suit his own
size. The lowest floor is divided in two allowing the stream to run
through the tower and fall from the cliff. Sturdy walls were built
around the tower leaving a large yard, with a manor house in the east side.
The Ager Privatus is far enough from settlement that it allows
reasonable peace, although a small path leads from Östrich to
Geroldstein, the nearest towns. The terrain in the area is difficult,
but nothing stops people from finding the site, especially because of
the tower's odd colour.
