Rules for new magi

These rules only apply to magus-characters. Companions and grogs are created according to the canon ArM4 rules.

When a magus leaves the covenant (whether naturally or not) and the player creates a new one, there are six things that are taken into account.

1. Seasons

The new magus gets to use 80% of the seasons of the newest magus in the covenant. This rule makes older magi more powerful, making players sure they wish to keep them alive.

2. Books

New magus has access to a library, which has all of its books (summae) at level 10, except for two books, which are at level 18. The player can decide which two Arts these are.

The usual books (Faerie Lore, Hermes Lore, Occult Lore...) can be assumed to be on level 4. Approved by SGs.

3. Spells

In the "covenant" the new magus is training at, he has also access to their spells. These spells can be taken from both Ars Magica 4th Edition and Wizard's Grimoire, as long as their level is 35 or lower. Normal rules apply to the learning of the spells.

If the player wishes to change a certain spell found in ArM4 or WGre, he must write down what he changed (Range, Duration, Target), and how he can justify these changes. Why would that spell be in that library? These changes must be later approved by the storyguides.

Magus may also invent spells. This is done according to the normal rules.

4. Vis

New magus can use two pawns of vis per year during his boosting period. If all of this vis is not used, it will be given back. If the new magus has no appropriate Virtues, he will not start out with any vis.

5. Laboratory

The magus has access to a normal laboratory, in which the lab equipment is nothing special, granting the normal +0 to lab totals.

The magical Aura in this lab is 3.

6. Experience

The new magus gains 2 experience points per year for the first 10 years (40 seasons), and after that 1 xp/year.
